Forecasting Lake Erie’s Health: Dissolved Oxygen, Chlorophyll α, and HABs

This project models dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll α, harmful algal blooms (HABs), and nutrient loading in Lake Erie. It also evaluates existing monitoring and modeling practices, identifying requirements for adaptive watershed management in both the U.S. and Canadian parts of the basin, using models like APEX, AnnAGNPS, HYPE, SWAT, and SWWM.

Project Description:

Modeling of Dissolved Oxygen, Chlorophyll α, HABs & Nutrient Loading in Lake Erie. This project focuses on modeling key water quality indicators in Lake Erie, including dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll α, harmful algal blooms (HABs), and nutrient loading. We’re also analyzing current environmental monitoring practices, modeling approaches, and the challenges and requirements for putting in place adaptive watershed management frameworks across both the U.S. and Canadian parts of the Lake Erie basin. The watershed models we’re working with include APEX, AnnAGNPS, HYPE, SWAT, SWWM, providing a comprehensive view of the basin’s dynamics.
